GB vs Northern Ireland car imports - what changed and what it costs
Since Brexit, the route matters as much as the car. A GB car can carry customs duty and import VAT. A clean NI used car can avoid those costs, but only if the paperwork stands up.
Run a live estimate
Great Britain route
GB imports need customs formalities before registration. The practical estimate should include purchase price converted to EUR, transport and insurance, customs duty where applicable, import VAT, customs-agent allowance, VRT CO2, NOx and registration costs.
Preferential origin can remove duty only when the required proof is valid. VAT usually remains payable on customs value plus customs duty.
Northern Ireland route
Used vehicles purchased in NI can avoid customs duty and import VAT when the vehicle was legally imported into NI or was already in NI before 1 January 2021 and remained there.
If the vehicle moved GB to NI after 2021 and proof is weak, model the realistic cost as a GB-style import until Revenue proof is clear.
Practical checklist
Before you travel
Ask for V5C, VIN, exact first registration date, NOx, CO2 standard, service records and proof of NI status if the seller is in NI.
Before you pay
Run both GB and NI scenarios, test OMSP at plus/minus 10%, and compare against Irish asking prices for the exact variant.
After arrival
Budget time for customs steps where required and registration through NCTS. This calculator labels every result as an estimate.
